[Nov 17] CELLS Winter Speaker Series: Dr. Elizabeth Farfán-Santos, "Undocumented Motherhood"

Dear colleagues,

You are invited to join us for the next event in the online speaker series: Technoscience Beyond the Nation-State.

| Nov 17 - 5:30-6:30pm CET / 10:30-11:30am US Central | “Undocumented Motherhood: Conversations on Love, Trauma, and Border Crossing” [Zoom Registration Here]

Claudia Garcia crossed the border because her toddler, Natalia, could not hear. Leaving behind everything she knew in Mexico, Claudia recounts the terror of migrating alone with her toddler and the incredible challenges she faced advocating for her daughter's health in the United States. When she arrived in Texas, Claudia discovered that being undocumented would mean more than just an immigration status—it would be a way of living, of mothering, and of being discarded by even those institutions we count on to care. A braided narrative that speaks to the power of stories for creating connection, this book reveals what remains undocumented in the motherhood of Mexican women who find themselves making impossible decisions and multiple sacrifices as they build a future for their families.

Bio: Elizabeth Farfán-Santos is the author of two books, Black Bodies, Black Rights: The Politics of Quilombolismo in Contemporary Brazil and Undocumented Motherhood: Conversations on Love, Trauma, and Border Crossing, both published by the University of Texas Press. She has a Ph.D. and M.A. in Medical Anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley and a B.A. in Cultural Anthropology from Trinity University. Her research and writing have focused on the health impact of political exclusion and racial inequality. Dr. Farfán-Santos has recently joined the faculty in the Department of Health Systems and Population Health Sciences in the College of Medicine at the University of Houston where she teaches courses in medical anthropology, health equity, and cultural humility.
