Dear all,

I am happy to invite you to the first surveillance studies seminar of this semester that takes place next week April 21 at 1PM Brussels Time, online. We welcome Shivangi Narayan to discuss police-use of facial recognition technology in India.

If you haven?t registered yet, you can do so here: https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.vub.be/events/2022/vub-chair-in-surve illance-studies-seminar-viii-with-shivangi-narayan-police-use-of__;!!HJOPV4FY YWzcc1jazlU!6i7wHhav531JrzjCGFD-eBreNjFda4Q11497FBNNHig8BIeUg0OB9IlPxl2aN8mOj iQSz_pWrrIMm3MXBRJefTicn_0bcLa6FuU$

What to expect?

Delhi Police used Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) to arrest thousands of men, aged 18-40 years, for inciting riots during the Delhi riots 2020. Many of these men still languish in jail, two years later on the basis of flimsy evidence generated by FRT which is assumed to be objective, neutral and free of any bias humans could harbour when it comes to criminal justice systems. They work without any accountability or oversight from the state; The use of FRT in Delhi Police is based on a Delhi High Court interim order which authorised its use by the police to only find missing children. Data Protection Laws in India, still under consultation, provide complete access to law enforcement agencies to all kind of data, in the name of national security and safety.

While there are several instances where we have seen further marginalisation when the technology does not work, or is erroneous in its judgement, this seminar will discuss the specificities of how technology intersects with power, and how even when it works, it pushes the marginalised further to the fringes.

Hoping to welcome many of you next week!

Kind regards,

Bram Visser PhD Candidate at the VUB Chair in Surveillance Studies PR & Communication for Privacy Salon & CPDP [cid:image001.jpg@01D85009.0C261620]
