Three PhD student positions in Information Studies at Uppsala University
Three PhD student positions in Information Studies Announcement at https://www.uu.se/en/about-uu/join-us/details/?positionId=601391 Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 54,000 students, more than 7,500 employees and a turnover of around SEK 8 billion. The Department of ALM (Archival Studies, Information Studies and Museum- and Cultural Heritage Studies) offers second-cycle education in the Master’s Programme in Archival Studies, Information Studies and Museum- and Cultural Heritage Studies and in the Master's Programme in Digital Humanities. The department also conducts doctoral-level education in Information Studies. The department currently has about twenty teachers and researchers and seven doctoral students. The department also includes the Centre for Digital Humanities Uppsala (CDHU), which offers support to researchers at Uppsala University in learning and implementing digital tools and methods for the humanities and social sciences. Read more about our benefits and what it is like to work at Uppsala University at https://www.uu.se/en/about-uu/join-us/ Duties The recruited doctoral students work with their thesis projects as a part of the national research school in library and information studies ReSource: Transforming Reading and Source Criticism in Digital Cultures financed by the Swedish Research Council 2023-2026. More information on the research school can be found here. To be considered, the project outlined in the research plan submitted for consideration as a part of the application needs to be completable by the applicant and be clearly relevant in one or several of the themes of the research school: 1) (dis/mis)information, changing information infrastructures, and source criticism, 2) current and historical informational reading practices, 3) libraries as institutional settings for promoting informational reading and source criticism, and/or 4) the credibility and trustworthiness crisis of research. More information about the themes can be found on the website of the research school (for URI, see above). Education at the doctoral level Education at the doctoral level consists of 4 years doctoral studentship (doktorandanställning). Doctoral students are expected to pursue their studies full-time and actively take part in the activities of the department. Departmental duties (typically teaching and administration) not exceeding 20% can be included in the positions. Applicants are required to have very good competence of both written and oral academic English. Doctoral education in Information Studies is regulated by the general study plan: abm.uu.se > Forskning > Utbildning på forskarnivå (https://abm.uu.se/utbildning/utbildning-pa-forskarniva/). English translation of the official Swedish version can be found at https://www.abm.uu.se/research/postgraduate_studies/ Qualifications required Applicants must have a Master’s degree in Information Studies, Library and Information Science, Archival Science, Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies, Digital Humanities or a corresponding degree in a nearby field. Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines at https://regler.uu.se/?languageId=1 Additional qualifications Great importance is attached to the applicant's capability to complete the dissertation project within 48 months. Very good knowledge of English is also meriting. Application Applications should include: • a short CV, • verified copy of the degree certificate for a relevant master’s degree (or equivalent) and a diploma supplement, and a transcript of records (if applicable) • motivation letter and a research plan (see below) • copies of written material (e.g., Master’s thesis) and other relevant documentation and written works the applicant chooses to present as a support for his/her application. Motivation letter and research plan The research plan shall not exceed 3,000 words plus references and must include a preliminary title of the proposed thesis, description of a scholarly/scientifically relevant aim and a problem statement, present the subject area and focus of the research, theoretical frameworks and specific methods to be applied, planned research material, and a preliminary timetable for the 4 year period. It is vital that the plan is explicitly linked to one or several of the themes of the research school, is pertinent to key questions in one or several topical areas within the multidisciplinary research field of library and information studies (incl. archival science, museum and cultural heritage studies and digital humanities), and addresses research questions that are highly relevant in these fields. The project plan is also expected to describe how the proposed project is related to the thematic areas of research at the Department of ALM. More information can be found here. Selection The selection will be based on candidate’s ability to profit by the education and to successfully complete the doctoral education. Considerable emphasis will be placed on the submitted research plans. NOTE! There is a possibility to provide supplementary material to the applications until June 10 2023 for the students who complete their undergraduate studies in the spring semester 2023 and need to complement their applications with their master’s thesis.
