Call for Associate Editors at Social Studies of Science

                Dear colleagues,

The editorial team at Social Studies of Science invites applications for new
Associate Editors. To help maintain SSS as a venue for showcasing scholarship
of the highest quality in science and technology studies, we seek scholars who
are deeply engaged in the field and have experience with editorial work. We
anticipate appointing three or four new Associate Editors to start sometime
during 2023.

Associate Editors at SSS are responsible for handing the peer review process
for manuscripts assigned to them by the Editors. This process involves
identifying and inviting appropriate reviewers, making editorial decisions
based on reviews received, and providing guidance to authors about which
suggestions they should attend to when making revisions. Associate Editors
handle approximately a dozen manuscripts per year (requiring an average of two
hours of work per week) and receive a $1000 USD honorarium annually for their
service.

We will evaluate candidates based on four criteria:

  1. Research excellence in STS. Candidates should have an established track
record of high- quality work in the field of STS and should be at least five
years post PhD.
  2. Relevant experience. Candidates should have experience relevant to
editorial work, which may include service as an editor or regular reviewer in
STS journals, grant review panel service, mentorship of STS graduate students,
or freelance developmental editing.
  3. Diversity of professional networks. Candidates located in
countries/institutions and engaged with professional networks that are not
well represented in the current editorial team will be given priority.
  4. Diversity of research expertise. Candidates specializing in research
methods, empirical topics, and geographic areas of study that are not well
represented in the current editorial team will be given priority.

In addition to these criteria, we seek to recruit some candidates who have the
capacity to serve in the role of Editor in the future. The journal anticipates
recruiting a new Editor to serve alongside current Editor Nicole Nelson
beginning in the fall of 2024. SSS has a history of appointing Editors who
have first served as Associate Editors, providing continuity in the journals
leadership structure. We recognize that not all qualified Associate Editor
candidates will have the interest or institutional support needed to be able
to serve as Editor, and this is not a required criterion for applicants.

For consideration, candidates should submit a CV and a cover letter addressing
the criteria outlined above to socstudsci@gmail.com by January 10, 2023.
Candidates are encouraged to speak to current Editors Nicole Nelson
(nicole.nelson@wisc.edu) and Sergio Sismondo (sismondo@queensu.ca) before
applying.

Please share this call in your local networks as well!

Best,

Nicole
