Call for visiting fellows - Helsinki - Social Study of Microbes
Dear all, Find below the call for visiting fellows at the Centre for the Social Study of Microbes in Helsinki. Instruction on how to apply here. Information about the centre here. The CSSM fellowship is awarded to three scholars from any career stage annually. During their stay, fellows will work on their own projects while engaging in the academic life of CSSM by participating and contributing to the organisation of activities in the Centre. Ideally, the three fellows join the Centre simultaneously to maximise opportunities for collaboration. During their stay, fellows will have visiting scholar affiliation and gain access to office space and other university services like libraries and online resources. Participants are expected to acknowledge the CSSM in any publication arising from their stay in Helsinki. The fellowship offers fellows economic support to visit the CSSM in Helsinki for 1 to 3 months at 1.500€ per month of stay which is meant to cover accommodation and living expenses. The CSSM will also cover travel expenses up to 1.500€. We will assist you with any necessary visa and travel arrangements prior to your visit. The CSSM is a hub for social scientists and artists conducting research on human-microbial relations. Microbes are not only biological entities but also shape, and are shaped by, our social worlds. The Centre aims to explore how relationships with microbes raise profound challenges for social theory, which demand new social scientific language and methodologies for describing and explaining the complex and entwined relationships between human and nonhuman animals, microbes, and the environment. Not only is this work theoretically motivated, it is key to developing sustainable methods of planetary co-existence in the Anthropocene. To facilitate the creation of innovative knowledge requires inclusive and egalitarian ways of knowing, the CSSM has a strong emphasis on collaboration. It is establishing an exploratory setting, in which new decentralised collaborative practices are developed. The Centre will host international research fellows and an art residency and organises social theory and methodology workshops, academic seminars, and a yearly PhD school.
