Submissions are being accepted for the Annals of Science best paper prize 2010. This prize is now awarded annually to the author of an original, unpublished essay in the history of science or technology, which is not under consideration for publication elsewhere.

The prize, which is supported by Taylor & Francis, is intended for those who are currently doctoral students, or have been awarded their doctorate within the past four years. Essays should be submitted to the Editor in a form acceptable for publication in Annals of Science (see the Journal’s webpage for a style guide, www.tandf.co.uk/journals/authors/tascauth.asp).

The Department of Mathematics at the University of Surrey wishes to appoint a Facilitator/Manager for the EPSRC-funded research programme Models and Mathematics in Life and Social Sciences (MILES). MILES is a programme of networking and idea-generation activities that aims to create new research collaborations between mathematics and the physical sciences on the one hand and the life and social sciences on the other. 

Creativity and a confident communication style together with sound organisational skills are essential for success in this job. The post holder will require good insight into the process of research as a creative and collaborative endeavour, and an understanding of the factors that can challenge or frustrate it, in order to design programme events that will encourage research creativity. Empathy with researchers, their concerns and aspirations will be important. Strong interpersonal skills will be necessary to engage effectively with the full range of programme participants and suppliers that will include academics, postdoctoral researchers, PhD research students, R&D workers in commerce and industry, external speakers, venue managers, caterers, external professional facilitators and others. The post holder will also be expected to liaise as necessary with administrative departments and services within the university.
