Date: » Monday, 5 May, 2008 - 15:29

NANOTECHNOLOGY IN SOCIETY: Emerging Issues of Accountability,
Responsibility and Citizenship

Organizer: Professor Andrew Jamison, e-mail: andy plan.aau.dk

Lecturers: Professor Andrew Jamison, Associate professor Niels
Mejlgaard, Aalborg University, and PhD fellow Mette Ebbesen, Center
for Bio- and Nanoethics, University of Aarhus

ECTS: 3

Time: October 27-30, 2008

Place: Aalborg University, Denmark

Deadline: October 1, 2008

Description: The rapid growth and development of nanotechnology raises
a number of significant ethical, social and political issues, which
are important for doctoral students to learn about in the course of
their professional training. Such issues as power over
nanotechnological decision-making, social and professional
responsibility, and the role of the nanoscientist in society are
generally not included in university curricula, and the main
motivation behind the course is to begin to fill this gap. A great
deal can be learned from experiences in other fields of advanced
technology, such as atomic energy, genetic engineering and information
technology, both in terms of the kinds of concerns raised by the
general public, as well as the responses to those concerns on the part
of the involved scientists and engineers and policy-makers. As such,
students in these fields, as well as students in the humanities and
social sciences with interest in these issues, will be welcome. The
course will be held in cooperation with the Nanoethics Network, based
at Aarhus University, whose coordinator, Mette Ebbesen, will be one of
the lecturers.
