The GSI undertakes interdisciplinary, action-focussed Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) research to support transformations towards sustainable and just societies. The GSI has a particular interest in research that has the potential for real-world impact, and thus has a wide portfolio of applied projects that focus on working with e.g. European Commission, UK Government, local authorities, charities and NGOs, business and industry, etc. Most notably for this post, we are the (social) scientific leads of the upcoming €3m Horizon Europe SSH CENTRE project (2022-2026) - the European Centre of Excellence for Social Sciences and Humanities research on climate, energy and mobility - as well as coordinating the newly launched €5m H2020 SHARED GREEN DEAL (2022-2027), which is implementing 24 social experiments across Europe on Green Deal priority areas. We have previously led the €1m European Innovation Forum for energy-related Social Sciences and Humanities (Energy-SHIFTS, 2019-2021) and its €2m predecessor EU platform (SHAPE ENERGY, 2017-2019). We have also received funding from six of the seven UK Research Councils (ESRC, EPSRC, NERC, AHRC, BBSRC, STFC), for example being part of major UKRI centres such as the ESRC’s Centre for Understanding Sustainable Prosperity and EPSRC’s EnergyREV. The position This is an exciting opportunity to join the well-organised central team of two high profile Horizon projects. Your main role would be as part of SSH CENTRE, working with 12 international partners, and supporting (for example): SSH literature briefs on EU policy priorities; coordination of three edited collections (Climate, Energy, Mobility) involving 30 collaborative teams of SSH-STEM* academics drawing on interdisciplinary insights to make policy recommendations linked to EU Green Deal Strategies; a training programme for Early Career Researchers on knowledge brokering between SSH research and policy; as well as journal papers built on the above. The successful candidate will also be expected to work around one day per week on the SHARED GREEN DEAL project (22 international partners), including as part of the social experiments on ‘efficient renovations’ (led by ARU, Aalborg University and Bankwatch Network) which will be building knowledge and know-how networks to develop skills, address energy poverty and promote gender justice, across four countries. The role offers huge scope for building your network both within and outside of academia. There may be opportunities in future to develop your own research bids or collaborate with GSI colleagues on proposals under development. Candidates must have a climate, energy- or mobility-related Social Science or Humanities PhD or Professional Doctorate (or nearing completion) in, for example: Anthropology; Business; Development; Education; Environmental Social Science; Gender; Human Geography; Psychology; Sociology; Science & Technology Studies; Political Studies; History; Law; Philosophy; Theology etc. or an interdisciplinary combination. Experience of qualitative research methods is required, and a track record initiating or contributing to collaborative, interdisciplinary projects is welcomed. *Science, Engineering, Technology, Mathematics Related information * Further details, including how to apply, can be found here: https://jobs.aru.ac.uk/vacancy/postdoctoral-research-fellow---ssh-centre-487753.html * This post is open to international applicants, for sponsorship under the UK’s Skilled Worker visa.
